A word about the photographs on this site

All the photographs on this site come from film or digital captures. They are brought into Photoshop where they are adjusted to appear as close as possible on screen to the way the scene appeared through the camera's viewfinder. The images are heavily compressed to allow for faster loading in your web browser. The actual photographs have much more detail then is represented on your screen. Colors may vary depending on how your monitor is calibrated.

I am very leery of  digital manipulation in nature photography. To adjust the exposure in order to pull out the shadow detail that slide film has so much trouble capturing, or to remove a scratch from a slide, or a flare spot caused by the sun bouncing off your lens, is one thing; adding things to an image that were not there in the first place is another story. Nature photographers record the natural world. The natural world is a place where the manipulations of human beings are minimal and in balance with its other inhabitants. When a person views a piece of art they understand they are looking at an image created by the artist. When that same person looks at a nature photograph they are likely assuming that what they see is something that actually occurred in a place that really exists. As photographers there is nothing wrong with creating an image in order to share our own visions. But if this creation resembles the natural world then we should be perfectly clear with our audience. We must let them know that this creation is our representation, instead of an actual recording of the natural world.
